Maid, by Stephanie Land, is an incredible memoir that is a very different perspective from that of any other book I have read. Stephanie, found herself a single mother with no college degree, no family help, and nothing to fall back on. Knowing that she had to do anything she could to provide for her daughter, Stephanie became a house cleaner/maid in order to make ends meet.
Stephanie’s book is a look inside poverty in America, and how things like government help and minimum wage is flawed beyond belief. Reading about the ins-and-outs of the Welfare system in America was shocking to me. It seems to me that so much of the system is designed for keeping people on Welfare and not helping them find a way out.
Stephanie’s book also touches on the personal stories of her time as a maid and the people she came into contact with in the Pacific Northwest. I was often touched by the personal connections that she made, and other times horrified by the way that some people treat other individuals.
Overall, found this book to be incredibly insightful and a really good read. Stephanie Land is a mesmerizing storyteller and I look forward to other books that she writes.
