The Lies That Bind was a surprise of a book for me- not a bad surprise- but not what I was expecting at all.

I have long loved Emily Giffin books. They are captivating, fun, and I have always enjoyed her character development. The most recent Giffin book is no different. The characters are well thought out; I instantly was a huge fan of the protagonist, Cecily. She is flawed, without being awful and she is very real in her insecurities.

What took me off guard was the fact that this is a 9/11 novel. To me, 9/11 seems like it was still almost yesterday and novels (or tv shows or movies) about it are just too soon. But, I guess with almost twenty years having past it makes sense that fictionalized accounts of that day are going to pop up. While I don’t feel that it’s bad, it just surprised me.

Giffin handled 9/11 really well and she wrote about it without sensationalizing it. The story is a page turner and it brooches some topics that I had never thought about in a wake of a mass causality situation- but I am sure it has happened.

Once again, Emily Giffin has given us another novel that is worth a read.
