I love the end of the year “best of” lists because I am always curious to see what other people view as the best of the best. This year, I came across a few “best of” book lists they had Chanel Miller’s book on it. Honestly- I had no idea who she was, and when I looked into the book I was shocked to learn that she was the woman at the center of the Brock Turner rape case. Usually these types of memoirs are totally not my thing, but I was interested as to why this book was favorited so many times this year.
Within the first chapter, it was obvious to me why Know My Name made it on so many lists. It is a beautifully written, deeply introspective account of Miller’s journey from victim to survivor. While the reason she wrote the book was the actual rape incident, the book was so much more than that. It was a look at how Miller grappled with what had happened to her and her will to survive…when everything was stacked against her. In addition, the book takes a deep look at the legal system that is set in place in this country and how the burden of proof falls on the victim- and even then, rarely are women in these cases believed.
This book was such a departure from what I typically read but I feel like I am better for it. I recall this case when it happened, and knowing that it took place on the same stomping grounds I grew up, made it hit home all the more. When Miller mentions certain places in the Bay Area I can actually recall the exact location. I feel as though I have been given an inside look at someone’s darkest moment and a front row seat to how she graciously survived.
It is a book I feel should be a must read for everyone.
