Spring Cleaning- Backyard Edition

I apologize in advance if you are a reader who lives outside of Southern California. If you are still in the depths of a horrible winter- know that these images are not made to incite a jealous rage. Please don’t move to CA – we have fires and earthquakes. Yuck. And we have too many people…way too many people…

This winter was a long, cold, wet, frosty couple of months for Southern California. The last few weeks we’ve had more mild temperatures and sunshine – something that we haven’t had a lot of. Greg knew that he had to clean up the backyard, and enlisted the whole family to help!

Step one- clean off the hillside! We have a nice slope in the back of our yard and it has been covered with myoporum since waaaay before we moved in. While it looks great right after planted, over time, the myoporum gets leggy and yellow . It was further stressed by the freezes and it just needed to go!

We pulled so much myoporum from the hillside!!! It was crazy! Lily thought it was a dream come true – stick after stick came off the hill and she thought they were just for her! She conveniently (ummm, no) parked herself in the middle of the trash pile!

Tay wasn’t much interested in the manual labor, but she was way into the animal life we uncovered. She quickly adopted a rolly-polly and a few massive snails then proceeded to make them a nice habitat.

The hillside was replanted with a rosemary groundcover (pretty AND edible!) and the rest of the yard got some attention. The flowers are bursting into bloom, my veggies and blueberries are doing awesome, and I’m hoping that this summer we will really feel the positive effects of all this rain!!!
