Good Reads

Always on the lookout for a good thriller, I finally got my hands on the Reese’s Book Club read, The Sanatorium. Talk about creepy! This book was one that I could not read in the dark! I don’t know if it is the setting (a refurbished sanatorium on an isolated mountain) or the writing (which is super descriptive and so well done!) but this was a daylight-only book for me!

The author, Sarah Pearse, creates a mood through her writing – and it is wonderful, and mystical, and full of suspense. The main character, Elin, is battling demons of her own when she agrees to a weekend away at the old sanatorium-turned-hotel high up in the Swiss Alps. I love how the author makes Elin’s past unfold while the mystery at the hotel is also unfolding – it’s like two mysteries at once!

I was really into this novel, but I felt that the end was sudden and a bit disjointed. It could just be me, but I wanted to ending to be different, perhaps a bot more complex. But, on the flip side, I think this might also be the mark of a really good book because I was super bummed when it was over!

Whatever the case, I enjoyed this creepy thriller and I look forward to more books by Sarah Pearse!
